Now before all the Wale Stans come out and give me all the hell the world has to offer i need you to hear me out for a change. Originally born in New York i moved to Washington, D.C. about 5 years ago to attend Howard University. When i first arrived in D.C. of course i had to get use to the slang and all of the wack ass go go music that i hear every day from room mates that really gets on my last nerve. Around this time Drake and J.Cole, Wale we're just starting to blow up. I got the since that hip hop was back at top forum except Drake of course i can really do without all of the emotional stuff. But J.Cole's Sideline Story made me love hip hop again and it gave me hope it made me feel like hip hop was heading back towards the right direction. Now before we talk about Wale lets talk about how the D.C. music scene has evolved over the years. You have Wale, Shy Glizzy, Logic, Light show, Fat Trel and now you have D'Allan Rixxx. Now to be honest out all these guys Wale can be compared to Jay ' Z but when i heard D'Allan Rixxx songs it raised a bar a little high for Wale.
Now lets talk about Wale, When i first heard Wale's music i think i heard the song Nike Boots for the first time. I thought the song was pretty cool but lyrically i thought the remix with Lil Wayne should have 2 verse with Lil Wayne only and left Wale off of the song. Now don't get me wrong because i like Wale radio records but when i actually decipher Wale's lyric's i can't get anything from it. Being as though i don't have a encyclopedia sitting near by or a dictionary most of his lyrics go way over my head and some times it just doesn't make sense. And please don't get me started on Shy Glizzy and Fat Trel and they're so called trap music.
And Logic i listened to his music about 5 or 6 times thinking i would hear flashes of Eminem but after the 6th listen his music never get played in my car. Now in no way am i bashing these guys but the style of music i grew up on was Lauryn Hill, DMX, Jay ' Z, Nas, Cypress Hill, Tech 9, Kanye West and music of that nature. When i moved to D.C. i wanted to hear an artist come out of D.C. who gave me that feeling when i opened The College Dropout for the first time. The closest i got to that was J.Cole sideline story but that album still wasn't enough to give me the College Drop out feeling but things have changed.
It was about 2 months ago to be exact probably 3 months ago i heard a D'Allan record for the first time. Now let me tell you after hearing what D.C. rappers had to offer i wasn't going to give this a chance at all. But then my girlfriend and my room mates we're having a debate about who was the best rapper out of the DMV. I heard the name D'Allan Rixxx, Logic, Wale and i thought to myself who the hell is D'Allan Rio a race car driver ?
I immediately went on youtube and typed in D'Allan Rixxx and the song Mind Of Mines came on. I had to smack myself to make sure i wasn't dreaming because i am so use to the same old trap garbage i hear on the radio everyday. But i must admit i was truly impressed and it made me want to listen to another song. So i looked down the list i found a song called " Another Letter " , In this song D'Allan raps as if he is writing a letter to one of his hommies in prison and dedicated the second verse to a friend who was killed and was setup. When i first read the comment i read a story about a girl who lost her brother at a young age due to gang violence i kind wanted to shed a tear and blame it on the onions.
But after hearing D'Allan songs i started ask myself will D'Allan Rixxx surpass all DMV artist ?
Some times he reminds me of Kanye West when he gets very creative. I know D'Allan has a small body of work but compared to the guys that come out of the D.C. area D'Allan makes these guys look like he could be in my top 5 list which includes Biggie, 2pac and KRS - ONE. D'Allan is still new to a lot of people but a lot of people are still to find out who he is. His conscious rap and the fearlessness in his music makes me feel that 90's feeling i haven't had in years. That also includes his lyrical assault. D'Allan is versatile and makes all types of music and all of his stuff doesn't make me have to google what he is saying most of the time like Wale's music no disrespect to Wale who i have wrote tons of reports on. But D'Allan's music is straight to the point and make me feel like i am back in New York again. D'Allan has his bravado and braggadocios moments but for the most part his music is authentic and i have become a huge fan over the last couple months. I am still waiting on his new mixtape that is slated to drop next month so when that comes out and things change we will see where D'Allan is compared to the rest of the pack.
